Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is the most common forms of sedation used in dentistry. Nitrous oxide is administered by having the patient inhale the gas, which is carefully monitored by your doctor. Effects of the gas start within the first few minutes, causing patients to feel calmer and experience warmness throughout the body, or even a tingling in their fingers and toes. All feelings of fear and anxiety fade away, leaving you to sit back peacefully while your dental procedure is performed. As soon as the procedure is complete, the patient is placed back on 100% oxygen for 5 minutes, as the nitrous oxide gas clears their respiratory system.

When is Nitrous Oxide an Option?

Literally any dental procedure can be used along with nitrous oxide. It is safe for all ages. We often offer nitrous oxide gas for procedures or concerns like:

  • Nervousness or anxiety
  • Teeth sensitivity during treatment
  • Cleanings and preventive care procedures
  • Cosmetic treatments and smile makeovers
  • Restorative-like fillings, crowns, or bridges
  • Dental implant appointments

There are many advantages to using Nitrous Oxide

  • The depth of sedation can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation.
  • There is no after effect such as a “hangover”.
  • Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects on your heart and lungs, etc.
  • Inhalation sedation is very effective in minimizing gagging.
  • It works rapidly as it reaches the brain within 20 seconds. In as little as 2-3 minutes its relaxation and pain killing properties develop.

Can I Go Back to Work or School?

Yes! Nitrous oxide is completely reversible. It is fine to drive yourself back to work, or even return to your normal daily schedule. Nitrous oxide is one of the easiest types of sedation to take advantage of, with no lingering effects after your visit like other types of sedation. In fact, after just 5 minutes of 100% oxygen, all of the nitrous oxide will have left your respiratory system and you’ll be able to go on about your normal routine.
